Contemporary, 25-story hotel tower to include sleek finishes, a lavish outdoor terrace and sweeping views of the downtown skyline

HOUSTON, TEXAS (March 26, 2014) – Houston-based Midway, a fully integrated real estate investment and development firm, in partnership with Valencia Group, an award-winning hospitality management and development company, announced plans today for Hotel Alessandra. The luxury property will anchor downtown Houston’s GreenStreet, a mixed-use destination located just steps from key downtown destinations such as the George R. Brown Convention Center, Toyota Center and Discovery Green park.

Slated to debut in late 2016, Hotel Alessandra will be the newest brand in Valencia Group’s acclaimed portfolio. This venture will be the second time Midway and Valencia Group have teamed up to introduce a hotel concept in the greater Houston area. In 2009, the companies unveiled Hotel Sorella CITYCENTRE, a Condé Nast Gold List hotel located in the heart of the CITYCENTRE district on Houston’s west side, which also is in close proximity to the Energy Corridor.

“As Houston continues to see an influx of business and leisure travel, we recognized an opportunity to provide the downtown area with a more sophisticated, best-of-class hospitality option,” said Midway CEO Jonathan Brinsden. “Through our partnership with Valencia Group, Hotel Alessandra will deliver the ultimate experience for guests and set a new standard for luxury in the city,” he adds.

While Hotel Alessandra helps fill the growing need for more hotel accommodations in the area, the hotel also provides an important anchor in the city’s plan for a vibrant, mixed-use retail district in downtown Houston. Additionally, the placement of Hotel Alessandra instills a sense of connectivity for visitors and residents, thanks to its convenient location to popular destinations, sporting complexes, the Texas Medical Center and mass transportation such as the Houston METRO rail.

“Midway would also like to thank Houston First and the Downtown Redevelopment Authority (TIRZ) for its financial support of Hotel Alessandra,” adds Brinsden. “Both partners took the time to seriously consider the proposal, ask the right questions and ultimately act in the interest of what is best needed to serve the downtown community. With their contributions, projects such as this will help give convention and leisure travelers luxurious accommodations while resulting in jobs, new tax revenue, and other economic benefits for the city of Houston.”

Although Hotel Alessandra’s design is still evolving, the contemporary-designed property is expected to feature approximately 225 elegant rooms and suites with oversized bathrooms, as well as premier meeting and event spaces equipped with the latest technological amenities.

Plans also include architectural details that will allow for sweeping views of the city and lavish indoor-outdoor spaces.

McCormick & Schmick’s and Lucky Strike. Earlier this year, re-development construction commenced on the 568,294 square foot development, which will include a three block urban linear park, mid-block pedestrian crossings, water features, a central courtyard in the project block between Fannin and San Jacinto, outdoor patios, updated wayfinding signage and lighting – leading to an overall enhanced visitor experience.

How to have a Career in Hotels

There are numerous ways to insert yourself into a hotel career and many people, like myself, who  literally stumbled into a hotel’s doors.  The most useful tactical action you can take is  to find a job working in a hotel as an hourly associate.  This line level experience will help you understand how a hotel works and if the business suits your personality and skill set.  Hotels are like air craft carriers in that they have people on board to self-sustain (cooks, housekeepers, accountants, human resource professionals, engineers, voice operators with the captain of the ship being the GM).  After spending time working in a hotel , you can navigate a more defined path based upon departments that you enjoyed the most.

There are many university programs that offer Hospitality Management degrees but just twenty years ago only a few (Cornell and Michigan State) were truly thought of as industry standard bearers.  You can also find numerous culinary schools to choose from and in fact many local community colleges have significant culinary programs that can help you gain the tools to step into a line cook position, where you will put in your time and gain knowledge and hopefully support from a Chef to boost you up the ladder.  Many accountants go on to become controllers and General Managers and many sales people become Directors and VPs of Sales.  I personally met my first GM in a meeting room in his hotel taking a Dale Carnegie course to become a better public speaker.  After weeks of seeing each other he asked if I had ever considered hotel sales. I looked puzzled because I thought with the lit sign outside and 1-800# number (at the time internet booking was NOT available) there was no need for direct sales.  Needless to say I was wrong and he hired me.  I produced new corporate accounts and built new leisure programs that propelled me to a promotion within the same company!

I have always liked people and perhaps that is the fundamental question to ask yourself before thinking of a career in hotels.  If you are not a ‘’people person’’ or ‘’people pleaser’’ it might not be a good fit.  There are long hours and the doors never close.  The profession is one that humbles you daily as you serve the guest like they are a king or queen.  Giving of yourself to help provide accommodation, security and sustenance are worthy endeavors so if you feel compelled then stumble into a Dale Carnegie meeting in a hotel and you might just find yourself a career!

Valencia Group has been known for the dutiful effort put forth with the design and architecture of it’s nationally recognized and award–winning boutique hotels: Hotel Valencia Riverwalk, Hotel Sorella CITYCENTRE, and Hotel Valencia Santana Row. With two new openings in late 2013 in Kansas City, MO and Austin, TX- the thoughtful artwork is no exception to their design trend.

Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza | Kansas City, MO

Valencia Group in collaboration with their designers and architects spared no expense inside the beautiful Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. Outlined below are three beautiful pieces of art that adorn the first expansion of the Sorella brand. Sorella – Italian for sister – is positioned as the precocious sibling to Valencia Group’s Valencia brand, which includes acclaimed locations in San Antonio and San Jose, CA. Chic and modern, Sorella blends timeless elements of classic design with Mediterranean influences.

1. The rooftop area inside Hotel Sorella named Rosso (Italian for the color red) is one that is inspired by the hill towns of Italy, boasting incredible views from above. “The “Running of the Horses”, a bi-annual event in Siena, brings each unique Italian neighborhood together to celebrate in festival. Portraying that message of a ‘sense of festival’, a mural was commissioned that spans 100 feet across the room. It is a tribute to the Palio di Siena, filling the space with an ambiance and sense of festivity and pageantry,” says Andrea Sheehan, Principal of Dawson Design Associates, Inc. The artist who completed the work was Lia Cerizo.

2. In the lobby of this property, guests can admire our rendition of the meaning of Sorella. This Sorella lady indicative s one of the Valencia sisters was completed by Sarah Atkinson. Sarah was born in in High Point, North Carolina in 1980, and grew up in a rural farming community. Surrounded by the beauty of nature and secluded by land, she developed a love for painting at a very young age.” She and her husband share a studio in the Carolinas now. This piece was commissioned as a custom piece for Hotel Sorella. The original version was meant to be a period-like look, think Roman, Renaissance, Italian high art portraiture. During the collaborative efforts, the painting then took a more contemporary spin which made her mysterious, interesting, and unique. .

3. An additional stunning piece in the lobby is the Chandelier. This inspiration came from “Blu” which is a chandelier made by designer, Paola Navone. “Blu” was shown at an exhibition for Milan design week 2010. The colors are spectacular and has quickly become our ‘signature piece’ that guests are raving about upon entering the hotel.

Lone Star Court | Austin, TX

In the Lone Star State, Valencia Group takes a modern approach to the motor courts of yesteryear. Tagged as “Authentic Americana”, Lone Star Court will boast of a pop art style oil painting that will hang in the lobby. Artist, Melinda Buie occupies a studio in Times Square in New York City yet grew up in East Texas. Buie’s grandparents had a herd of about 200 cattle. “My family spent weekends out on the farm and I fell in love with the cows. My parents have since taken over Ravenswood Farm and have cows as pets. I have spent the past 14 years painting them from photographs I have taken through the years. Every now and then a project calls for a Longhorn, which we did not raise. I have relied on a friend’s farm in Cat Spring, Texas, to photograph their Registered Texas Longhorns.” says Buie.

The painting for Lone Star Court is called “Billy” and is one of their Registered Texas Longhorns. This is a 48 x 72” oil on canvas.

Three Hotels Earn Spots on the 2014 Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 

HOUSTON, TX – January 2, 2014 – Valencia Group, a Houston-based hotel management and development company, is pleased to announce that for the second consecutive year, all three of its hotels have earned coveted spots on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List for 2014.  Hotel Valencia Santana Row in San Jose, CA, anchor of the Santana Row mixed-use development; Hotel Sorella, anchor of the CITYCENTRE mixed-use district in Houston, TX; and Hotel Valencia Riverwalk, located on the waterfront in the heart of downtown San Antonio, TX, were among the 511 hotels, resorts and cruise lines that scored highest based on the results of early 47,000 reader surveys.  The 2014 Gold List results will be featured in the magazine’s January issue and are currently online.

The Gold List placed Hotel Valencia Santana Row as the only hotel in San Jose to make the list.    Hotel Sorella CITYCENTRE was one of only two Houston hotels to make the list and ranked 2nd in all of Texas.   Hotel Valencia Riverwalk was among only two San Antonio properties that made the list.  Approximately eight million votes are tabulated, taking into account criteria that include rooms, service, food, location, design and activities.

Valencia Group’s new concept at the Domain

AUSTIN—Lone Star Court, a new upscale, retro-inspired, motor court concept hotel at the Domain, is opening tomorrow, Dec. 24, just in time for the holidays.

An authentic Americana roadside hotel by Valencia Group, recognized nationally and internationally for its service and style, Lone Star Court has an aesthetic that’s authentically Austin and Texas Hill Country from the furniture in the rooms to the unique outdoor environment.

Lone Star Court has 123 retro-inspired guest rooms with high-tech amenities. True to Austin, the hotel will feature live music by an outdoor fire pit, a dipping pool reminiscent of Hill Country swimming holes, and an onsite food trailer court featuring its own signature food truck, the Feed Store, and other local favorite trailers on a rotating basis. Lone Star Court’s full service restaurant, The Water Trough, will have a Texas-centric menu and a full bar featuring signature cocktail “The Chill Cowboy.”

Lone Star Court will draw business as well as leisure travelers to its unique “ranch-tech” property, and The Water Trough and Feed Store will be a destination for Austinites as well as visitors, says Doyle Graham Jr., president of Valencia Group.

“We believe that Lone Star Court is the most exciting new concept in the hotel industry,” Graham says. “Lone Star Court is a 21st century re-interpretation of the nostalgic motor court which, at the same time, captures the essence of Austin and the Texas Hill Country. It’s a one-of-a-kind place; totally unique to Texas’ capital city.”

Lone Star Court offers approximately 2,000 square feet of interior meeting space, a 1,600 square foot outdoor covered pavilion, and an adjacent open-air lawn that adds 1,800 square feet to the total available meeting space.

Lone Star Court was created by Valencia Group, a Houston-based company known for its luxury independent Hotel Valencias in San Antonio and San Jose, and Hotel Sorella CITYCENTRE in Houston and Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza in Kansas City.

During the early days of auto tourism beginning in the mid 1940s, roadside campsites led entrepreneurs to create quaint, cabin-like places for travelers to stay. Simple cottage camps began to evolve into more sophisticated full-service motor courts, and the number of motels in America tripled to more than 60,000 by the 1960s.

The new, more modern motor courts along great American highways featured “air cooled by refrigeration,” television, coin-operated radios, tiled bathrooms, easy chairs, and “perfect sleeper” mattresses. After decades of booming business, mom-and-pop motels began to disappear in 1956 with the Federal-Aid Highway Act that funded construction of the interstate highway system. With little means to move their facilities or re-route traffic, these gems of the road gave way to corporate chains staking their claims along the new highways.

Lone Star Court will take visitors back to the heyday of the roadside motor court experience, where guests can discover an era of authentic Americana along with modern amenities and the excitement of Austin.

The architect for Lone Star Court is RTKL Associates of Dallas, led by Jim Suggs. Suggs was part of the design team for Hotel Valencia Riverwalk in San Antonio and Hotel Valencia Santana Row in San Jose.  The designer for Lone Star Court is Lauren Rottet of Houston-based Rottet Studio, and the landscape architect is Christine Ten Eyck of Austin-based Ten Eyck Landscape Architects.

Valencia Group Signature Olive Oils, the Perfect Holiday Gift

Since 2013 has proven to be a year of tremendous growth for Valencia Group, growing from 3 to 5 boutique hotels, we felt that the timing was perfect to look into private labeling a signature food item. Known for our culinary team and restaurant/bar experiences in our current cities of San Antonio, TX, San Jose, CA and Houston, TX – ‘food’ is always on our radar with ideas on how do we stay current and continue to exceed expectations. San Antonio TX – October 21, 2013 –Condé Nast Traveler readers have named all three Valencia Group properties to the magazine’s 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards list. With a score of 94.1/100 Hotel Sorella CITYCENTRE in Houston and Hotel Valencia Riverwalk with a score of 92.8/100 in San Antonio placed at #2 and #5 in the Top 15 Hotels in Texas, while Hotel Valencia Santana Row in San Jose was #10 among the Top 25 Hotels in Northern California with a score of 90.5/100. The Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Survey, begun in 1988, is available through a secure Web site at condenasttraveler.com/vote. This year’s tabulations of 79,268 responses were done by Equation Research. The questionnaire contains lists of candidates in various categories (Cities, Hotels, etc.). Candidates must receive a required minimum number of responses to be eligible for a Readers’ Choice Award. Individual candidates are judged on a set of criteria relevant to their category, based on a standard five-point scale: excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor.

New Kansas City hotel to feature modern Italian cuisine and renowned chefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 21, 2013) – This November, Kansas Citians can experience a little bit of Italy right in their own backyard. Rosso, a new restaurant on the top floor ofHotel Sorella Country Club Plaza, will offer modern, upscale Italian fare amid wonderful views of the city.

Rosso (pronounced ROHS-soh), which means “red” in Italian, was inspired by the hill town in Italy of the same name and seamlessly blends classic European style with a Midwestern sensibility. The vision for Rosso stems from “Palio di Siena,” or “Runningof the Horses,” a biannual event in Siena that brings neighborhoods together tocelebrate in the festival. The name, Rosso, signifies the rich red tapestries that hangfrom the buildings in Siena during the festival. A 100-foot mural will adorn the walls to help create this sense of festivity and pageantry.

“Rosso will offer a combination of classic Europe and the rustic spirit of the Midwest,” says Robert Leyva, general manager of the Valencia Group. “At the restaurant and bar, people can enjoy one-of-a-kind views of Sunset Hill, Brush Creek and the Country ClubPlaza, and the food is sure to impress.”

Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza has hired an executive chef and a corporate chef for the restaurant. Their combined experience brings a level of expertise that is unmatchedin Kansas City.

  • Brian Archibald joins Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza and Rosso as executive chef. An industry veteran, Chef Archibald studied at the California CulinaryAcademy in San Francisco and has worked at New York’s four-star restaurant, Daniel, the famed AAA Five-Diamond Phoenician Resort in Phoenix, and most recently at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel.
  • Thomas Gagliardi will serve as the hotel’s corporate chef. Chef Gagliardi’s pastexperience includes working at AAA Five Diamond properties such as the Bellagio Resort Hotel and Casino and the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa and openingtwo five-star hotels in Dubai.

“To me there’s nothing better than good food, great people and a one-of-a-kindatmosphere,” says Chef Archibald. “We promise to deliver all of that at Rosso. I lookforward to partnering with local farmers to ensure we’re using the freshest ingredientsfor our guests.”

Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza is scheduled to open Nov. 6, 2013. It will offer 4,000 square feet of dining and drinking space, along with a rooftop pool terrace for al fresco occasions. Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza is located at 901 W. 48th Place. Rosso will be open Sunday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m. for breakfast, 11:00 a.m.-2:30
